Third LOFAR Data Processing School

The Third LOFAR Data Processing School will take place at ASTRON in Dwingeloo (The Netherlands), in the week of 17-21 November 2014.

The aim of this School is to introduce the LOFAR system to users and new members of the collaboration who will analyse Cycle data. Students, postdocs, and staff are all encouraged to attend. The school will cover the many aspects of the LOFAR system from the capabilities of the basic station hardware to the software pipelines and science products they produce. Members of the LOFAR project will present lectures and tutorials. Hands-on sessions will also be provided to give attendees an opportunity to gain experience with real LOFAR data.

Presentations will be given at a level appropriate for someone new to LOFAR. Familiarity with the concepts of radio interferometry and standard data processing software such as CASA, AIPS, or Myriad will be useful, but not required. Minimum requirements should include some familiarity with scripting languages and in particular Python. Participants are expected to bring fairly recent Linux or Mac OS laptops with tens of GB of disk space.

The school will be hosted by ASTRON (Dwingeloo). Note that registration to the School is on a first come - first serve basis and limited to 40 participants. In case you are interested in attending the school, we encourage you to proceed with the online registration as soon as possible: http://www.astron.nl/lofarschool2014/registration.php

2013 ISR school (MIT, Haystack)

This week, there is the 2013 Incoherent Scatter Radar school being held at MIT Haystack Observatory. Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory will have a lecturer there and we can expect reports on the EISCAT_3D weblog during the week.

International EISCAT Radar School 2012

From the SGO website...

In the near future the EISCAT Scientific Association will face a major instrumental upgrade with the ESFRI Roadmap project "EISCAT_3D: A European Three-Dimensional Imaging Radar for Atmospheric and Geospace Research."

EISCAT, in co-operation with the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory, will run a training course for new users of the EISCAT radars, from 27th August to 1st September, 2012 (Monday to Saturday). The training course will be held at Sodankylä, where one of the EISCAT UHF remote sites is located.

The course will cover all essential aspects of the current EISCAT systems, including the science programme. An overview of the existing hardware and software will be provided and future plans will be discussed, with a strong emphasis on EISCAT_3D. The course will have a very strong emphasis on practicals, i.e. work in groups of participants on real data. There will be a dedicated radar experiment for every group, and the groups will then analyse their data and present their results under the guidance of an experienced team of instructors.

The deadline for registration is 12th July 2012.

Inverse Problems Africa 2012

Just in case you are wondering, you haven't accidentally stumbled into the wrong web log. However, although KAIRA is an Arctic project, we have some other collaborations and connections with other interesting project in other parts of the world. The following is posted on behalf of Lassi Roininen, from SGO.

The Inverse Problems Africa 2012 school and conference will be held in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. These two back-to-back events will be held in October 2012. The events will cover both the theoretical and practical aspects of inverse problems in mathematics and physics with applications.

Featured topics include:
  1. Statistical inversion and incoherent scatter radar. Organiser: Markku Lehtinen, Finland, University of Oulu, Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory

  2. Epidemiology models and Markov chain Monte Carlo methods. Organiser: Heikki Haario, Finland, Lappeenranta University of Technology, Department of Mathematics and Physics

  3. Stochastic differential equations and their applications to pollutant dispersion in shallow waters. Organiser: Wilson Mahera, Tanzania, University of Dar es Salaam, Department of Mathematics

  4. Tomographic imaging. Organiser: Samuli Siltanen, Finland, University of Helsinki, Department of Mathematics and Statistics

Full details about the school and conference (including details about registration and travel) can be found at http://www.inverse-problems.org/
