The first is the cable reel from which a pair of cables is send into the ducts and out to the cable mausoleum. Once fully deployed, the remaining ends are connected to the patch panel.

The patch panel can be seen on the top right. Already it is populated with nearly 100 orange- and white-labelled cables. In the next photograph, Rauno Oikarainen (right) waits for Toivo Iinatti to connect the draw-lead, before pulling the cables through the ducts.
